Why subsidize your neighbour's energy habit?
Are you a condominium owner?
Are your electrical costs included in your condo fee?
If so, you may be subsidizing your neighbours' bad habits when it comes to using electricity.
Historically, energy costs for condominium owners have been hidden in condominium fees. Condominiums associations would receive a bill from their utility that was based on the "bulk metering" of all condominium units combined. The Association would then simply divide that bill by the number of units and pass the cost onto the condominium owners. Everyone paid the same amount, regardless of how much electricity they consumed or saved.
The Ontario Government wants that to change. In March 2006, the Government passed legislation requiring all condominium units to be submetered, giving condominium owners the ability to have more direct control over their energy costs.
Submetering makes it easy for condominium associations to bill owners directly for the electricity they use.
