Did you know?

  • The Ontario government plans to have 800,000 smart meters installed by September 2007.
  • The Ontario government's goal is to reduce electricity demand in the province by 6,300 megawatts.
  • There are about 2.6 million rental apartment, condominium and social housing suites in Ontario.
  • Only 15 per cent of apartments, social housing suites, and condominiums are individually metered.
  • The province plans for all Ontario consumers to have smart meters installed by Dec. 31, 2010.
  • When submetering is installed in a typical condominium complex about 60 percent of residents will see a net reduction in their monthly energy costs; 20 percent will experience no change; and 20 percent will see their monthly energy bills increase.
  • Under a bulk metering system, the 60 percent of residents that conserve energy are actually subsidizing the other 40 percent of residents that are either indifferent or heavy users of electricity.
  • Studies have shown that when submetering is installed in multi unit complexes, electricity consumption is reduced by as much as 25 percent.
  • On a summer’s day, an increase of one degree in temperature results in an increased demand of roughly 400 megawatts of electricity.
  • A smart sub-metering panel is about the size of a clipboard and records information for 20 suites.
