Smart Metering vs. Submetering

What's the difference?

Recent changes to Ontario energy regulations to enable smart metering and smart submetering in condominiums might have some people asking what the difference is. What is smart metering? What is submetering? And what makes a submeter smart?

Submetering enables multi-unit condominium Boards and/or associations to bill residential owners directly for the energy they use. Smart metering is the ability to automatically record total electricity consumption hour by hour. Energy used during peak demand hours is charged at a higher rate than energy used during non-peak hours. Smart-submeters combine the two features within a single submetering unit. Condominium boards that opt to install submeters in their buildings are wise to ensure that the submeter product they choose also has the ability to “smart” meter. Otherwise, down the road, they might face a costly retrofit to install smart metering capability as the Ontario government continues to seek ways to manage Ontario’s energy demand and supply.
